Our Own Little World Time was, when I would be walking down the street and encountered someone who appeared to be speaking to somebody yet that somebody was nowhere to be found, I would retreat to the other side of the street so as to avoid someone who I classified as just plain crazy. Things like that may not have happened in the neighborhood where you grew up, but they sure happened in mine. Nowadays, when I stumble upon a similar scenario, I know that the speaker is sane; it’s just that they are talking on their Bluetooth. It is great to be living in a time where we can communicate, listen to music, take pictures, and do various other things in a way not dreamed possible by previous generations. Yet at the same time, the constant use of cell phones, i pods, laptops, and the like tend to assist us into retreating into our own little world, oblivious to what may be going on around us. As followers of Jesus, we must add to our repertoire an awareness of those in our midst who are hurting. Whether afflicted by loneliness, overwhelmed by family or financial difficulties, suffering illness, or just reaping the devastating effects of sin in their lives, they are all around us. The scripture tells us (Matthew 15:30) of great multitudes coming to Jesus, bringing with them those who were afflicted in several different ways, and the Lord healed them. Though Jesus was certainly not of this world, He was in it and chose to interact with those around Him in a positive way, refusing to be off in His own little world. The lesson is obvious, and that is we must be as salt and light to the world around us and that necessitates contact with, not withdrawal from others. From meeting earthly needs to preaching the gospel that saves, God’s people are to be aware and involved as we minister to others in the name of Christ.
