The Main Point is God

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and earth.” (Genesis 1:1). Genesis chapter one describes creation, but creation is not the main point. The main point is God. He is the focus of the passage. The supreme lesson to see in creation is God! Creation demands a creator. The opening chapters of Genesis are not about history. They are about God. Science is not the emphasis. “In the beginning, God” God is mentioned thirty—four times in Genesis chapter one. It is a record of God’s action. The story cries out, “there is a God!”

The fact that God exists shouts another lesson: You and I must deal with Him. By his very nature, God will not let himself be ignored. Have you ever thought about a dilemma God has? He wants us to believe in Him by choice, not by force. God could overwhelm us with his presence, leaving no option except to believe. He could force us to follow Him and we would be powerless to resist. But He wants us to freely and deliberately choose to give Him our love and allegiance.

So instead of overwhelming us with proof of his existence, He drops hints. Hints like the moral sense within us, the creation, and the universal tendency to believe in a supreme being of some kind. Those hints point to God without overwhelming us or forcing faith on us. But even though He does not force Himself on us, God requires that we deal with Him. He has given us His word—the Bible—to reveal His character and will. He sent His Son, Jesus, to give a living demonstration of who He is.
